The Robe of the Judge

When the self appoints itself the world’s moral court, it becomes the engine behind the worst deeds. Atrocity is almost always the work of people certain they are right and that the other is bad enough to deserve it. Condemnation is what turns a person into a target. It is fed by the reflex verdict, by the certainty that you can see the whole from your one small window, though good comes out of bad and harm out of good. The surest sign you are about to be wrong is the feeling that you are certainly right. So for the next thirty minutes, take one thing you judge, in others or in yourself, and hold it until the certainty begins to loosen. Disarm the verdict before it hardens into a sentence someone else has to serve. Mercy is not agreeing with everyone, it’s refusing to reduce anyone to their worst moment.
